A new board of directors and officers for Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery was elected at a special meeting called by the New Jersey State Cemetery Board on 6/12/2008

The new directors are:

Brian Lamb
Darlene Cimino
Michelle Egar
Jorge Aviles
Jasime Pinet
Hector Solivan
Eileen Marenstein

The board then elected Eileen Marenstein - President and Treasurer, Jorge Aviles - Vice President, and Jasime Pinet - Secretary.

The new board faces the challenge of how to continue to operate the cemetery and maintain it in the future. It was reported by the Cemetery Board that the cemetery's Maintenance and Preservation Fund contained only a little over $17,000 and generated income of only a little more than $700 last year. Under New Jersey State law only the income of the Fund can be used to maintain the grounds.

Another item of interest which came up during the meeting is the fact that the records of the cemetery may have been removed from the premises by a relative of the past caretaker. The new board is aware of the importance of the records and will make every effort to secure them.

Given the situation at the cemetery now is the time for anyone with family interred at the cemetery to step up to lend a helping hand.

Can someone advise me if the board members would be able to open the gates to allow visitors to enter? My uncle and aunt went up to the cemetery last week and were unable to visit the grave site of my Grandparents as the gates were locked. I do not know the plot number and only my uncle (who is now 90 yrs old) knows the exact location of the plots. I will try and map out the exact location based on my uncle's memory but I find it upsetting that there is no caretaker on the premisses. There is such history in this cemetery! I think it would be feasible to set up some type of website or link to solisit docations to save the cemetery. Maybe arrange for a volunteed day to assist with the maintainence of the lawns?

Please know that the new Board is hard at work getting their arms around the disarray that was left at this beautiful little cemetery. A new 'Gatekeeper' is opening and closing the gates each day (Mon-Sat 10 to 4, Sun 10 to 5).

The grass is being cut by volunteers until a new staff can be organized. The cemetery house needs much repair before a caretaker can live there again. There is a fundraising campaign being planned to address this and other issues.

A Community CLEANUP at the Cemetery will take place on Saturday, August 2 at 9:30 am. Hope you will tell your family and friends and come help. Thanks!

Thank you for the information Eileen. I did visit the Cemetery on Thursday, July 24 and was able to enter, the gates were unlocked. I did find the grave site of my grandparents and took pictures of the site for future reference. I was glad to see that some of the paths were mowed but it was alarming to walk through knee high weeds and soft ground to get to the site. If the Board has a site for donations I would be more that happy to participate. Very pleased to see that there will be a volunteer day to clean up the Cemetery, wish I could attend. Thank you, Carol
